Building the Church (cont.)

In this third lesson on "Building the Church" we continue to consider the matter of the superstructure. Remember the "building" we are dealing with is called: "the church". In our last study we considered the building's superstructure as consisting of "living stones". Now we shall look at the superstructure in terms of "the church", God's assemb1y.

3. THOSE WHO ARE "CALLED" FORM THE CHURCH

Let us review the meaning of the word "church". It is the translation of the Greek word "ekklesia". It is derived from the preposition "ek" (out of) and "kaleo" (to call), thus suggesting a CALLING OUT. "Living stones: in the structure of "the church" are those who have responded to "a call", and are referred to as "the called".

Rom. 8:28,30 - " And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.... And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself. And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory."

Rom. 1:6 - "And you are included among those Gentiles who have been called to belong to Jesus Christ."

Jude 1 "This letter is from Jude, a slave of Jesus Christ and a brother of James. I am writing to all who have been called by God the Father, who loves you and keeps you safe in the care of Jesus Christ."

a. THE "CALL" IS TO CHRIST

Matt. 4:18-22 - "One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers—Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew—throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” And they left their nets at once and followed him. A little farther up the shore he saw two other brothers, James and John, sitting in a boat with their father, Zebedee, repairing their nets. And he called them to come, too. They immediately followed him, leaving the boat and their father behind."
